Rich and Jess’ fundraising event for Teddy20

Rich and Jess' fundraising event for Teddy20

Some of you may be aware that one of our Directors, Richard Cook, has been away from TMS since August last year due to his two year old daughter having been diagnosed with a brain tumour. In light of this, Richard and Jess (his sister and fellow Director) are doing some fundraising for an amazing cause. Both Richard and Jess are taking part in a sponsored haircut and beard shave! Richard will be shaving his hair and beard and Jess will be cutting off around 40 cms of her lovely long hair.

Below is a personal message from Richard:

“On the 26th August 2024 our family’s lives changed forever. While my wife and I were enjoying a weekend away in Prague, our daughter who was staying with my parents, stopped eating and drinking and was taken to A&E. We flew back home and went straight to meet them at A&E.

At this point we had previously seen numerous GP’s with symptoms such as wobbliness, a head tilt and sickness. This was all put down to being a toddler and having a viral infection. But I think deep down we knew it was something else.

When we got to A&E my wife spoke to the doctor at length about her symptoms and they decided that the best course of action was to have a CT scan. That CT scan showed that our daughter, who was approaching her second birthday, had a brain tumour which needed urgent treatment. We were then blue lighted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which is where we stayed for the next six weeks.

In the following days and weeks our daughter needed three brain surgeries, one of which was to remove the tumour. The surgery lasted for over 10 hours.

A week or so after the removal of the tumour we found out it was cancerous and that we would need a specialist type of radiation called Proton Beam Therapy, followed by a course of chemotherapy. Currently the NHS can only carry out Proton Beam Therapy in two places in the UK, so we were sent to Manchester for a six and a half week course of treatment. This meant moving our lives to Manchester and attending the Proton Beam Centre at The Christie Hospital, five times a week, where our daughter would have general anaesthetic each day.

In January of this year Pippa started chemotherapy treatment back at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. We are approaching the end of her treatment and routine scans so far have shown no signs that the tumour has returned, which we are all beyond happy about”.

Before I start talking about fundraising I would just encourage you to make yourself aware of the symptoms of brain tumours, which in children can often be misdiagnosed. The symptoms are different for adults and children and The Brain Tumour charity have a wealth of information on their website which I would encourage anyone to read.

As a result of the chemotherapy treatment Pippa lost her hair, so Richard and Jess felt it was only fair that they join forces with her. If you would like to donate to this amazing and worthwhile cause, you can do so by clicking the button below. Richard’s ‘JustGiving’ page provides some more information about the charity and their fund raising target. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Your support and kindness is greatly appreciated (plus you will be able to see Richard without hair or a beard, something which his colleagues are looking forward too!!)

Samaritans’ Brew Monday 2024

Samaritans' Brew Monday 2024

We are pleased to have held another Samaritans’ Brew Monday event in support of our Director, Richard Cook , who volunteers at the Solihull Samaritans’ Branch. This was in aid of getting rid of the ‘Blue Monday’ stigma, where the the third Monday of January is considered to be the most depressing time of the year. We instead filled our time with a challenging and fun quiz, alongside a yummy buffet! We had supporters around the Business Innovation Centre (BIC)  such as the people of TalentTech Recruitment and Reciteworks.com by 4cite Labs.

2 men enjoying a quiz and food

The quiz consisted of events that happened during 2023, ranging from film releases to sports events that occurred. Everyone brought their ‘A game’ for the quiz, with the winners only having won the quiz by one point!

Four winners of the quiz.

The winners ended up being the Team “Backrow” who consisted of Allison (BIC), Julie, Jan Alcock (TMS) and Francis Jr Asigurado (TMS). They won a sweet and chocolate assortment which they shared with everyone!

TMS and the other businesses around the BIC raised over £290 for the charity! Which will be a great help for the continued work of the Samaritan Solihull Branch.  We would like to thank the Business Innovation Centre, Binley for providing the space for our event.

If you ever feel like you need to talk to someone, you can call the Samaritans for free on 116 123.

TMS raise over £500 for Children in Need

TMS took part in the SPOTacular day as we hosted our first ever Children In Need event! We had a fun filled day full of spotty people as we embraced the BBC Children in Need fundraiser. There was a host of activities for people around the Business Innovation Centre (BIC), from a raffle with different prizes, guess the chocolate in the jar and of course the TMS yearly bake sale!

This year we had strong contenders for our bake-off style competition ranging from tiffin’s to vegan chocolate cakes and there was even a prize for the best one! This year we opened the competition for everyone around the BIC to give Lorna, the reigning champion, more competitors! Lyndsey from TalentTech was tasked with a difficult job to taste all the cakes and decide a winner…the results are as follows…

Pudsey bear plushie and pastry forks

3rd Place – Richard Cook (TMS) who won a Pudsey Pin badge

2nd Place – Lola Age 12 (TalentTech) who won a Pudsey Bear plushie

1st Place – Lorna Styring (TMS) who won pastry forks

Lorna once again continues to defend her title…will she ever be stopped?

We’ll find out next year!

Other winners from the raffle and the guess the chocolate in the jar were:

ITAI Crash Demonstration Day

ITAI Crash Demonstration Day

On Thursday 8th June 2023, our Engineers had the opportunity to attend the Crash Demonstration Day in Darley Moor, Derbyshire, organised by the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (ITAI). This annual event, known as the ‘ITAI Crash Day,’ offers valuable insights into the consequences of collisions and the resulting damage and injuries. It serves as a platform to observe and understand the sophisticated data associated with various collision scenarios.

Hosted at Darley Moor Airfield and Road Race Circuit, the venue itself holds significance. Situated on a high plateau adjacent to the A515, two miles south of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, the airfield operates under Airways Airsports, providing training in a wide range of leisure flying activities. Originally a Second World War runway, it has transformed into Darley Moor Racetrack, primarily catering to motorcycle races and track days under the management of Darley Moor Motor Cycle Road Race Club.

Crash Test Collision (2 Car Collision)

During the Crash Day, staged collisions were meticulously conducted under controlled conditions, allowing our staff to witness the impact first-hand in a safe environment. After each collision, they had the opportunity to inspect the damage up close. Multiple video recorders and overhead drones documented the collisions, enabling forensic collision investigators to thoroughly analyse the scenes. Spectators were then provided with the findings, including information on the speed, weight, and speed on impact of each vehicle involved.

Alongside the demonstrations, attendees could explore a variety of trade stands and attend informative seminars throughout the day. The Crash Day proved to be an incredibly interesting and beneficial experience for our staff, as they gained deeper insights into the intricacies of collision dynamics and the sophisticated data that underlies them.

These valuable insights gained during the Crash Day reinforce our commitment at TMS to prevent and mitigate the severity of collisions through our Road Safety Audit and Safety Engineering work. By witnessing the staged crashes, including collisions with traditional lamp posts, passively safe structures, head-on vehicular crashes, high-speed rear-end shunts and side impacts, our engineers observed the significant damage sustained even at moderate speeds.

Particularly impactful were the rear-end shunts, which completely demolished the rear seating area of a car, and the side impact that caused an ambulance to overturn and roll when struck by a large car travelling at high speed.

The seminars held during the event also provided an opportunity for our team to stay informed about industry developments, such as e-scooter trials, tyre safety, and in-vehicle safety technology. This knowledge is crucial for our training and continuous learning as we strive to stay at the forefront of our field. Demonstrations like the Crash Day reinforce the importance of our work in promoting road safety and inspire us to further enhance our efforts in creating safer road environments.
